Difference Between Lab And Natural Diamonds – Daniel Namdar here and in this #diamondtalk I wanted to delve into a hot topic in our industry; Lab-grown versus natural diamonds. Are they really the same?
Generally speaking, when you read about a topic like this, it is usually written by someone who has a vested interest in selling natural or lab-grown diamonds and is therefore biased. Although we sell natural diamonds at Namdar; I wanted to try to explain this topic honestly – without trying to promote one over the other – and just explain what they are.
Difference Between Lab And Natural Diamonds
So first of all – what is a diamond? In short, and leaving aside all the details that no one really pays attention to – it is a type of rock formed by carbon atoms under high pressure and temperature, which, when cut well, can reflect light (i.e. glow) very nicely. Many factors influence value, but the most important are beauty, durability and, most importantly, demand. For centuries, diamonds have been a symbol of wealth, status and achievement, and to this day it is an accepted part of culture that diamonds carry value. Because people constantly want to own and wear diamonds, prices remain stable and even increase over time.
Is It Better To Buy A Lab Created Or Natural Diamond?
Until recently, diamonds grew out of the ground, and although people tried to imitate the appearance of a diamond with things like cubic zirconia, moissanite, etc., it was always just a cheap attempt at making a copy, and not the real thing at all.
Everything changed when people found a way to grow diamonds in the laboratory. They managed to perfectly recreate the conditions in which a diamond can be formed. The end result is a stone with the same exact chemical composition and so identical to a natural diamond that an industry expert cannot even tell the difference between them without specific technology (which is not true in the case of the easily noticeable CZ.)
I’ll skip the whole argument about them being “more ethical” or “better for the environment” etc. because I really don’t believe one is clearly better than the other. Blood diamonds are no longer popular – it is now very easy to buy conflict-free diamonds. And the natural diamond industry employs millions of people. Producing a lab-grown diamond also uses a lot of energy; so ultimately I don’t think anyone can objectively say that one is better for the world than the other.
So what’s the difference? Why pay more for something when you can get exactly the same thing for less?

Take the following example: some paintings cost hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. A Picasso painting titled “The Woman of Algiers” sold for $106.5 million. Now imagine technology that could scan this image and create an EXACT replica. Same materials, weight, size, frame, even signature – all exactly the same. A replica so good that even an experienced art collector, looking at the original next to the replica, would not be able to tell which is which without some technology. Can this be considered “the same”? The answer is: technically, yes, it’s exactly the same thing, but not quite. Ultimately, even the best replica is like that; replica. Key difference: artist. The painting is expensive because it was painted by the genius Pablo Picasso, not some computer.
It is similar with diamonds, with the difference that in our situation the artist is the Earth. Creating diamonds in such a chemically chaotic but organized world is extraordinary. No human can decide whether the Earth will make another billion copies or what they will look like.
Having said all this, there is nothing wrong with a rejoinder. Not everyone can afford an original Picasso or Van Gogh, but many still want to enjoy a beautiful painting and hang it in their homes. Not everyone can afford a 4-carat diamond, but they want that big, shiny stone on their finger. There are markets for both products and that’s why I don’t think the lab market is going anywhere.
One thing that must be said about the value of lab-grown diamonds is that due to the unlimited production possibilities, there is no telling how low their value may be. (One of the things that makes Bitcoin valuable and tempting is its guaranteed, finite supply.) But if you’re not a seller and just want trinkets, this shouldn’t bother you too much anyway.
Natural Vs. Lab Created Diamond Rings
As always, buying diamonds and jewelry is a very personal and intimate choice and there is no right or wrong. The only task is to find something that will make you happy.

The idea of a Natural Diamond is convenient. This is what people have been doing for centuries, and choosing a Natural Diamond is associated with attractive passion and reliability. Here’s what to consider when deciding between lab-created diamonds and natural stones.
A lab-grown diamond is one that has been produced in a controlled laboratory environment. Using popular chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) methods, scientists can now create diamonds that optically resemble diamonds mined from the earth, have the same chemical and physical characteristics, and even obtain certification from the Gemological Institute. America (GIA).
Oh yes. Lab-grown diamonds are as real as diamonds mined from the ground. They have a shape, size, color and clarity just like natural diamonds. Both natural and lab-grown diamonds have the same physical and chemical properties and both are diamond certified.
Lab Vs Natural
Visually, natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds are exactly the same, with the same level of hardness and durability. In 2018, the Federal Trade Commission recognized Lab Diamonds as real. But do lab-created diamonds work as real diamonds? Yes. In fact, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) “has been grading lab-grown diamonds since 2007. As of July 1, 2019, GIA’s lab-grown diamond reports and identification reports no longer use the term “synthetic.” The GIA Lab-Grown Diamonds Report includes the GIA standard color, clarity and cut scales for your reference.
The differences between natural diamonds and laboratory-grown diamonds cannot be seen with the naked eye. Natural diamonds contain small amounts of nitrogen, while lab-grown diamonds contain no nitrogen. In fact, this is one of the indicators used by gemologists to determine whether a diamond comes from a laboratory or is natural.
Natural diamonds are formed under the pressure of the earth’s crust for millions of years, then they are mined, polished and polished. A lab-grown diamond is placed in the same circumstances, only in a laboratory setting. In fact, the process used to create a lab-grown diamond significantly reduces its growth time, from millions of years to just a few months. Then the laboratory diamond is also cut and polished.
Lab-grown diamonds are sometimes referred to as man-made, synthetic, cultured or artisanal. Interchangeable language may confuse the consumer. But each expression means the same thing: a certified diamond that has been “grown” in a laboratory. Sometimes lab-grown diamonds are called CVD or HPHT, which simply refers to the process used to create the diamond.
Difference Between Lab Grown & Natural Diamonds
The first process is called chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The “seed crystal”, a very small diamond grain, is placed in a small chamber. The chamber is then filled with gases that are heated. Once the gases reach the appropriate temperature, layers of carbon begin to form on the seed crystal. This causes the seeds to grow and form a square-shaped diamond crystal.
